In order to make this new generation of web simpler and easier to manage, it’s been built using WordPress Multisite. This is a feature of WordPress which basically allows one installation, or database, to be as many websites as you’d like. There’s one primary settings screen, configuration, plugin repository, and theme repository. Logging into DIYFloorboards.com.au is the same as logging into MintFloors.com.au – one place, one admin panel.
As with everything in life, the Multisite installation method has as many advantages as it does disadvantages. For instance, adding a plugin to a website has added steps from the normal. There’s only one copy of things like the themes function.php file, so changing it for one site, changes it for the other as well.
As you would imagine, the Dashboard is exactly that – an overview of what’s going on inside the Jon Holst Network. From this page, you can create a new site or add a new user.
Dashboard -> Updates #
Similar to more traditional WordPress installs, the Dashboard -> Updates page shows you aspects of the installation that require updates. Plugins and Theme files, as well as WordPress versions and Translations will appear here.
It is important to note that when an update is available, do not simply update. There are a lot of moving parts within this network and one change can derail the entire thing. Update only after reading the release notes and knowing for sure it won’t cause any damage.
Dashboard -> Upgrade Network #
This screen is a little feature that allows you to update the databases for all child sites in the Jon Holst Network. For instance, when WordPress updates from the current 5.9.2 to the next version, you can simply come here, click this button and the database for both DIYFloorboards.com.au and MintFloors.com.au will be updated.
Again, when updating anything like Plugins or WordPress versions, don’t mindlessly update. You must have a look quickly to see if the update will cause any errors or faults.
Dashboard -> Updates options #
This is an additional Administration tool to keep things controlled across a Multisite installation. With this build, there are some plugins that cannot be updated automatically, or at all (due to the custom script that was created to access functions we wanted i.e. the Quote Request function and the Area/Product Calculator).
This controls what plugins are allowed to update and the process in which they do.
Keep it safe, don’t change anything here.
This section of the Admin panel allows for editing of advanced settings to the sites in the Jon Holst Network as well as the addition of them.
Here you can change the GUID (URL) of a site, the site admin details etc. as well as creating a new site in the network. The network has been setup for sub-folder installation, meaning if you were to add a new site, the default GUID (URL) for it would be diyfloorboards.com.au/[your-new-site-name].
This section is for the management of users within the Jon Holst Network. Here you can add/remove users as well as assign them access to sites within the network.
Users -> Add New #
In the event of needing to add a new user to the network, simply add their username and email. To keep it consistent with how they’ve been created so far, the username has simply been firstnameFirstinitial (i.e. kimp).
Once this has been done, an email is sent to the email address you listed. The user will then confirm their email address and they’ll appear in the All Users screen.
To give them permission to log into a site, navigate back to Sites -> All Sites and edit the site that you wish to add them to.
Navigate to the Users tab on the Edit Site screen and Add Existing User. Start typing their username or email and they will appear. Click add user, then they’ll be able to log into the site under the Role that has been set.
This section controls the themes that are available to the Jon Holst Network. Leave this section as there’s nothing that you need to do here.
There will be times that we at the Xtemos team will push out an update for Woodmart – I’ll administer the update manually depending on whether or not this network (and sites) need that update.
Potentially one of the most destructive pages in the admin panel, the Plugins page controls all the plugins for the Jon Holst Network. Should you need to add/remove/update a plugin, this is the page you’ll do it from.
Because a large portion of the websites are custom built, please do not update every and all plugin as soon as it becomes available.
There is nothing you need to be doing in here.
The only thing required of you within this section is outlined in the article RUN A MANUAL PRODUCT SYNC BETWEEN DIY AND MINT.
SG Optimizer #
This is a feature of the hosting environment that allows us to control certain optimisation features like:
- Image Compression
- GZip Code Compression
- Minification Settings
- HTTPS rules, and more
You don’t have to make any changes here.
This is a plugin and feature installed and managed by ContentSME in relation to the SEO of DIYFloorboards.com.au and MintFloors.com.au.
In Closing #
There are a few sections within the Admin panel that you’ll have to deal with, but please note a lot of damage can be caused in these screens if caution is not used. If you’re ever in doubt – firstname.lastname@example.org, or 0452 273 283.
